“Maduro Board” of the Central Bank of Venezuela v “Guaidó Board” of the Central Bank of Venezuela

Acting (led by Richard Lissack KC and Jacob Turner) for the “Maduro Board” of the Central Bank of Venezuela in litigation concerning the right to represent, and give directions on behalf of, the Central Bank in relation to c. US$2 billion of Venezuela’s international reserves held in the Bank of England’s vaults and c. US$120 million held by court-appointed receivers.

Mincione v Secretariat of State of the Holy See (Commercial Court)

Acting (led by Richard Lissack KC and Christopher Langley) for the claimant investment funds and their principal in Commercial Court proceedings arising from the Holy See’s investment in a London property. The claim raises issues of state immunity, breach of an English law settlement agreement said to release the claimants from, and to preclude, proceedings against them in the Vatican, and fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation against UBS AG (as successor to Credit Suisse).


Ad Terra Consultancy SA v HSBC UK Bank Plc (Commercial Court)

Acting (unled) for a Swiss company in a claim under Part 8 against HSBC UK Bank Plc for a declaration that the bank is liable to make restitution of funds transferred into one of its accounts as a result of a third-party fraud.

Acting (led by Richard Lissack KC and Fraser Campbell KC) for Rio Tinto in the BVI Commercial Court in proceedings seeking to restrain enforcement of a judgment of the Arbitrazh Court of the Kaliningrad Region, which ordered Rio Tinto entities to pay about US$1.28 billion and directed foreclosure against a 66% shareholding in a Mongolian mining company. The proceedings raise issues of anti-enforcement relief, conspiracy, and sanctions.

SFO v United Insurance Brokers Ltd (Southwark Crown Court)

Acting (led by Clare Sibson KC) for a Lloyd’s broker charged with failing to prevent bribery under section 7 of the Bribery Act 2010. The case is listed for a six-week trial in June 2027, and is expected to be the first SFO prosecution under section 7 to be heard by a jury.

Advising a defendant on the prospects of appeal from a criminal conviction under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.


MPS v Airy (Kingston-upon-Thames Crown Court)

Acting for the Metropolitan Police in the Crown Court in a successful application for a forfeiture order under section 303Z14 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 in relation to funds alleged to have been obtained through consumer fraud.

Karonis v JP Morgan International Finance Ltd [2025] EWHC 1842 (Comm)

Acting (led by Richard Lissack KC, Robert Weekes KC, Timothy Lau, and Warren Fitt) for WeRealize.com Ltd and four directors of a Greek fintech company in successfully obtaining anti-suit relief restraining the prosecution by JP Morgan of proceedings brought against the directors in Greece seeking damages of close to €1 billion. Following an expedited trial, the Commercial Court held that an exclusion of liability in the parties’ shareholders’ agreement gave rise to an implied covenant precluding JP Morgan from suing the directors in a jurisdiction that would not give effect to that exclusion, and granted anti-suit relief on that basis.

Acting (led by Richard Lissack KC, Robert Weekes KC, and Timothy Lau) for WeRealize.com Ltd in c. €5 billion proceedings in the Commercial Court and Court of Appeal relating to a shareholders’ dispute over a Greek fintech company. The proceedings, which were expedited both at first instance and in the Court of Appeal, raise complex issues of US banking law and the proper approach to the valuation of a company for the purpose of call options.
